  • SUN Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA) gives Live Webcast from time to time. Such Webcast does everything that you mentioned above. Since SUN likes to use its own technologies, so perhaps you can check its software product lines?

  • It also depends on what you meant by "fundamental software", speaking from the perspective of a software developer. An operating system's role is quite well defined: it manages and allocates a computing device's resources (memory, CPU etc). Can a Web browser fill this role, theoretically yes, but then it should be called an OS with a built-in browser 8-)

  • My suspicion is that you have installed some Firefox addons, correct? If so, disable them all, Quite (not Quite and Save) Firefox, and re-launch it to see if the supposed Twitter look and feel would come back. Afterwards, you can enable these addons 1-by-1. This way, you can nail the culprit.

  • Since Firefox depends on may libraries, other than the networking stack, so the system can't be "too bare bone". For really stripped system with networking, you may have to run a text based browser such as lynx instead.

  • Based on what I have seen locally in Silicon Valley, among IT companies and tech startups, getting written about by TechCrunch seems to be the Holy Grail of everyone, even many dislikes TC! Not being in the marketing biz myself, I can't say more.

  • Check the PHP messages in your Apache error logs (assuming you run a typical LAMP setup). Usually such messages are pretty telling. If that doesn't help, post your Q (together with the error) in Computer/Technologies on TweetBrain.com
